On May 31, the Marom Jewish Culture project welcomed participants to a community arts and cultural program series.
🌱 From Seed to Fruit – Echoes from the Garden of MIKÉFE (Hungarian Israelite Crafts and Agricultural Association)
The program explored the role of plants within Jewish tradition. Plants were presented not merely as elements of nature, but as carriers of meaning: mediators of text, memory, and renewal. The period surrounding the holiday of Shavuot provided a particularly meaningful context for this exploration, as the festival connects the harvest season with the giving of the Torah, bringing together the cycles of nature and the transmission of knowledge. The program drew connections between the work of Immanuel Löw, who interpreted plants through the linguistic and cultural traditions of Jewish texts, and the world of MIKÉFE, where cultivating plants served as a means of livelihood, learning, and social mobility.
🌿 14:00–16:00 | The Lost Garden of Immanuel Löw – Family Expedition
The family program began at Csányi5, where participants embarked on a map-guided journey through five stations before continuing into the surrounding parks. Lasting approximately thirty minutes, the expedition offered a shared experience of learning and discovery rather than competition, and concluded with a surprise gift for participants. The program was led by game master Ráhel Papp.
🪻 16:00–17:30 | Cyanotype Sun Print Workshop with Bence Illyés
Participants took part in a hands-on cyanotype workshop inspired by plants and botanical forms. Through this historic photographic process, they created unique sun prints and were able to take their finished works home with them.
🌳 17:00–18:00 | Summoning Immanuel Löw – Audio Walk
Created and performed by Zsófi Rebeka Kozma, the audio walk invited participants to engage with the legacy of Immanuel Löw through a guided sound experience. Equipped with mobile phones and headphones, the group departed together from Csányi5 and continued into a nearby park, where the soundscape and environment became part of a shared act of remembrance and reflection.
🌸 18:00–19:30 | Exhibition Opening and Zine Launch
The exhibition From Seed to Fruit – Echoes from the Garden of MIKÉFE opened with works by Kinga Énzsöly, Zsuzsi Flohr, Dániel Halász, and Zsófia Szemző. The exhibition remained on view in the gallery space for one week.
The evening also featured the launch of Clapping Trees, a collaborative zine with contributions from Viktor Cseh, Kinga Énzsöly, Zsuzsi Flohr, Fuzzy Earth, Kitti Gosztola, Dániel Halász, Zsófia Szonja Illés, Klára Oó, Zsófia Szemző, and Kata Tranker. The risograph printing was produced by Bpzines.
The exhibition and zine were curated by Andrea Ausztrics and Zsófia Szemző.
The program was realized as part of the project “ReActMem: Rescue Memory – Activism, Arts, and Public Remembrance,” implemented by Marom together with twelve European partner organizations and supported by the European Union through the Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values (CERV) programme.
