Personal stories - contemporary art workshop at the Bánkitó Festival

In cooperation with the Israeli Cultural Institute, a 3-day contemporary Jewish art workshop series will take place in the framework of the Bánkito Festival, supported by the Dutch Jewish Humanitarian Fund.

The program is also open to participants of the Bánkito.

The beginnings of Jewish literature, poems, stories, tales, and essays are rooted in Torah commentary literature, also known as rabbinic literature, but what does this mean? How should we conceive of these texts?

Göndörd and Göndóre's workshop "I dreamed with my grandmother - the chamber of secrets
The production "I dreamed with Grandma", which has toured New York and will be presented at the Bánkitó Festival, presents the intimate 32 days in which the surviving Grandma and her grandson László Göndör, who is searching for identity, spent 32 days trying to understand each other's pain, traumas and deep love for each other. Through the performance, Grandma's home is revealed to the audience, but many of the secrets sewn into the pillow remain hidden. In this workshop with limited seating, led by Laci Göndör, we will look together into these secret places, which no one but the creators have ever seen.

Bob Cohen and Sue Floyd have been collecting the legacy of Eastern European Jewish folk music for decades, traveling almost all over Eastern Europe. Thanks to them, through music, the memory of the diverse Jewish culture that characterized the region from the 18th century to the Second World War is revealed. The music and folk dance collections were gathered from elderly musicians; Jews, Hungarians, Gypsies, Rusyns, and Romanians. The presentation will give an insight into the stories of the collection.

16.30-18.00 Performance
Zsófia Rebeka Kozma and Bíborka Janka Béres - performers, theatre artists
A creative workshop of movement and sound improvisation based on agricultural tools, exploring the possible relationships between people and the land and the connection to different tools. The first half of the workshop will be a guided exercise in theatre and movement improvisation, leading to the second half of a free collective jam inspired by each other and the objects.

Poetry and Jewish prayer as ways of dealing with trauma.

13.00-14.30 Meredith Marks - dance movement therapist/healing arts practitioner
Unprocessed trauma is both inherited genetically through our physical makeup and passed down to us through the behaviors we learn from our families and communities. In this workshop, we will explore how the Jewish wounds of the past live in our bodies. We will explore how to dialogue with the trauma of our ancestors and soften its impact on us through expressive movement and dance.

History is written in pictures - the artist as witness
The representability of the Holocaust has always been a sensitive and much-debated issue. Through artworks from the collections of the Hungarian Jewish Museum and Archives, depicting everyday life in concentration camps, ghettos, and labor camps, we will explore the question of the role of art in the representation and processing of trauma, alongside documentary photographs and the written memories of survivors.
