What happens to the visual arts during quarantine? How does the creative process work? How to present the completed works in the online space? Art Can’t Be Quarantined is a series, where we sought answers to these questions through the presentation of our 2020 mentoring program.

Mentored by: Réka Gregóczki, artist, University of Pécs

Mentor: Tamás Milán Don, curator of MODEM

About the project: Gym / Synagogue 2020, Zenta, video

This video is based on a more personal experience or impression. The recording was made on a winter evening in the interior of the Zenta Synagogue, which now functions as a gym. The gas convector, which provides heating, conducts heat to the main square of the synagogue through industrial pipes as ceiling heating. In this case, the building is completely silent in the evenings and only the soothing crackling of the fire and the gas pipes can be heard. The recording focuses on aspects of the fire symbol. If we think of the venue as a gym, our pleasant feelings remain, if we look at the scene of the scene as a synagogue, we can associate the scene of gas heating with the destructive symbol of fire and furnace, which can be associated with a completely different, painful association with the Holocaust.

What is this mentoring program? The ZSK 2028 project launched a mentoring program at the end of 2019. We have published a call for young artists who are working on a Jewish theme in their works, or who have a project idea that touches on this theme. From the applicants, we selected 3 individuals who will work with the mentors to develop their ideas. The mentors came from members of the ZSK network.
